Macromedia Director Lingo Workshop for Windows
Published in Paperback by Hayden Books (July, 1996)
Author: John Thompson
Average review score:

Best Director book I ever purchased!
This is the best Director book I ever purchased! I learned how to do something in the 1st chapter and not just the last chapters in the book. I am just learning lingo and this book has a lot of useful examples.

From the earliest versions of Director to the most current.
I use Director 7, and this book is made for Director 5. . . And let me just say it makes no differnce want version of Director you are using, if you want to know about Lingo, then this is the book for you! After just reading 4 of the 18 chapters of the book, I know more about Lingo then I did after reading two other books! This is a must have for any serious Director User!

No frills, all information.
As someone who both works with Director and teaches it at the university level, I'm always looking for good books for beginning to intermediate users. This is NOT the first book I recommend for beginners (usually that's Director Demystified) because it's pretty dry and technical.

But, for anyone who has a general understanding of how Director works, this book is useful in the way a good cookbook is useful. If you know what you want to do, you can look it up and find clear instructions on HOW to do it. My copy is filled with post-it markers showing the answers to questions students have raised in class ("How do I get Director to... ?) The sample movies are very helpful, and teach a valuable lesson: learn the basic principle using the simplest of movies, then apply it to the real thing.

Since the most recent version of the book covers Director 5, I'm waiting for an updated version. But most of the information in the book is still valid...Lingo doesn't THAT much from version to version.

Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Performance Tuning Technical Reference: Technical Reference (Pro-Technical Refere)
Published in Hardcover by Microsoft Press (August, 2001)
Authors: Edward Whalen, Marcilina Garcia, Steve Adrien Deluca, Dean Thompson, and Jamie Reding
Average review score:

Good book
Performance is a responsible and important job. Although you might be doing mostlt reactive tuning, tuning is still what you need and the more tricks you have , the better chance you have to not be beaten .
This book supplies bunch of good stuff to get started.

Performance, Performance, Performance
I tell my clients and users that the two most important services that a DBA provides are security and performance, but not necessarily in that order. If you are a professional SQL Server DBA or a DBA wannabe, performance has to be one of your top skills.

This book, by Edward Whalen, gives you the information that you will need to accomplish the very important task of planning a new SQL Server installation. There is a lot of very useful discussion that relate the physical hardware parameters of the server to the expected performance that users will experience. This discussion includes a comprehensive survey of how the I/O subsytem contributes to the overall server performance. There are also two chapters on sizing and capacity planning, with carefully worked-through examples detailing how to size memory and how to determine appropriate disk and processor configurations for a new installation.
Of course, the other major task in the performance arena is troubleshooting. Although Whalen's book doesn't present a performance troubleshooting checklist, the major theme of this book centers on recognizing and remediating performance problems. In many cases, the book also discusses the origins of the preformance problems. By the time you internalize this book, you'll be able write your own troubleshooting checklist.

In my opinion, the two best aspects of this book are:
a) Unlike some other "Performance" books that I have read, this book focuses on performance and not a million other things. It discusses performance, not DTS, not Security, not Internet, etc. It just talks about performance.
b) With the Acknowledgments section thanking Bill Gates twice, and this book being written by Microsoft insiders, I would have expected lots of hype. Pleasantly suprising, but true, this book has no hype. Just plain facts about performance. Good show.

I did have one small disappointment with this book, though - I was hoping to get more insight into the use of the Query Analyzer execution plan tools. The fact is that Whalen's discussion of this facility is probably the best information that's out there, but it still falls short. If the authors write another edition, we would all benefit if they could work up some detailed examples that explain the various aspects of the execution plan tools. It would be super if they would provide samples that we could download.

The tuning bible for SQL Server 2000!
As both a professional database consultant and DBA, I must agree that this is hands down the best overall tuning book for SQL Server 2000. It covers the gamut from hardware planning and sizing/tuning to database performance tuning. Easy to read and quite useful! Great job Microsoft Press another winner. Get it and become a tuning god.

Great book
This is an excellent and well-written children's book. The storyline is one that keeps children wanting to read more, and never put the book down. Murder at Spoleto
Published in Paperback by Elderberry Press (January, 2003)
Authors: Leigh Thompson and Maurice Thompson
Average review score:

Charlestonians write humorous thriller about bioterrorism.
Charleston characters, customs, cuisine, and history run through every paragraph of this thriller that will not only keep you on the edge of your seat but make you disturb your neighbors with laughter. You had better have one of those golden screws in your navel holding it on lest you laugh your a... off. Each character is so life-like you want to talk to them. Each death is so unique can you figure out if it is foul play, or in the case of the third death fowl play. When cyanide shows up as a bioterrorist threat to wipe out the lowcountry things move along at a rapid clip to an amazing climax, wrapped around local spirituals and 300-year old history. Buy it today but read it in a sound proof booth.

Fun, murders, and romance in the Holy City--SUPER.
Only Charlestonians could have captured the unique culture and characters of the Holy City so perfectly. Every page is filled with wry humor and local color. The authors are to be congratulated for their ability to use the most precise forensic sciences like CSI, the most devastating characterizations like Biography, with believeable protagonists like Law and Order all wrapped in the style of Tom Clancey combined with Saturday Night Live. As poisoning and murder begin to take center stage there is news of a shipment of a half-million lethal doses of cyanide that threatens a bioterrorist event in this usually pleasant community. Leading Charleston families will recognize not only their names but their behaviors in this gripping story that wraps todays and tomorrows events around 300 years of history with an ending you won't guess. Read it in one setting, but be sure you won't disturb your neighbors with your laughing out loud at every page if not every paragraph. Where is the sequel?

Murder, Forensic Science, Sleuthing, Romance, and Terrorism!
Leaping from today's headlines this mystery skilfully weaves Charleston's culture and characters around a don't-put-me-down mystery. At the annual arts festival, Spoleto, stars triumph then die on stage. The first might be an accident as the diva is impaled on a bassoon "like a stuffed shrimp at Shucks." Then in an irreverent passion play, in which Pilate gets to flip for the sentence, the actor playing Christ dies on the cross. Two accidents in three days? Bad luck? Or murder. Bubba, the sleuth, and Mary Elizabeth, the medical examiner, team up in romance and using the most modern science, right out of CSI. When the prima ballerina collapses in convulsions, foul play must be on stage, but it takes all their ingenuity to discover the cause and the culprits and not before a shipment of cyanide threatens to end Spoleto and Charleston. Humourous mayhen with action on every page makes this a must-read and not so much scary as fun.

Mysteries of the Sacred Universe
Published in Paperback by Govardhan Hill Pub (20 November, 2000)
Author: Richard L. Thompson
Average review score:

Excellent
Dr. Thompson (author) in the introductory pages of the book- "The question naturally arises as to whether modern astronomical themes as seen in the old texts are really there, or are they simply being read in hindsight. Were such themes intended by the original authors or is their presence in the text due to coincidence or loose interpretation. It is difficult to answer this question in all cases."

A book that starts off with such an honest thought - you can see that the author did work really hard on the matter in anticipation of any skepticism.

I have been reading Dr. Thompson's works for quite some time now. This book is just amazing - the detail and information packed in this book - simply amazing.

There are very clear explanations, pictures and references to Vedic texts and there is no ambiguity. The author presents a very clear picture of how the Universe was thought of or perceived in the Vedic period. This book is based on 25 years of hard work from a Cornell mathematician.

I recently atteneded a seminar presented on this book. You may also want to purchase the Sacred Universe CD with Dr. Thompson's mulimedia presentations and pictures (NOT included with the book).

If you are interested in Vedic cosomology and astronomy and how the Puranas correspond to the Universe, you MUST read this book. period.

Excellent work!
Simply stated, this book was not at all what I had expected. It far exceeded my expectations. I had expected another treatise on the mythology and belief systems of Puranic literature mixed with some way of tying it to today's understanding of life and the cosmos. Instead it was a very scholarly work that delved into the knowledge of ancient India and how it was expressed in terms of mythology. The author's interpretation of this mythology brings it into focus and ties it to what we have learned in the field of modern astronomy. Instead of viewing the Puranic literature as being composed by those who were less knowledgeable and limited in their understanding and superstitious in their ways, his interpretations shows that they had a very advanced understanding of the universe around them. A little complex and confusing at times, it required rereading of several sections before I really understood how they were tied together. Not a work that I would recommend to a new-comer to the Puranic literature but a highly recommended volume to anyone with an intermediate knowledge.

Informative and thought-provoking reading
The "Bhagavata Purana" is one of the classical scriptures of Hinduism. In Mysteries Of The Sacred Universe, Richard Thompson draws upon his considerable research and expertise to show that the cosmology of the "Bhagavata Purana" is a sophisticated system with multiple levels of meaning encoding at least four different astronomical, geographical, and spiritual world models. Thompson shows how ancient scientists expressed exact knowledge in mythological terms. He also compares the ancient traditions of Egypt and the Near East to reveal early cultural connections between India and these regions. Mysteries Of The Sacred Universe is informative and thought-provoking reading, which offers an insightful understanding of how the spiritual dimension was integrated into ancient Indian cosmology. Also highly recommended is the Mysteries Of The Sacred Universe Interactive CD ... which is enhanced with 250 color pictures, 23 computer graphics animations, 13 interactive picture sequences, and a 48-minute video of all topics covered in the book edition.

Podiatric Medical Assisting

Authors: Leonard A. Levy and Anne Keeler Thompson

WHEN IS THE NEXT BOOK COMING OUT?
This is a very good book. I was given a copy of this book to look at and found it to be a very informative well written text. There are no textbooks for the PMAC that are of this caliber. My favorite chapters were surgery, instruments, padding and strapping, and history and physical exam. The assistant authors are very talented and owe it to their profession to continue to publish. Please contact the editors and contributors and get a 2nd edition published. I will continue to use this as a reference source and will refer to it often. Let's get another one on our book shelves. Thank You for this book.

when is the next book comming out?
My Doctor gave me this book as a gift. I have been a assistant for 8 years. This book has helped me learn more. My Doctor says that these girls lecture at the big podiatry meeting in chicago in the spring. I cant wait to go learn more. I cant wait for the next book.

A "MUST HAVE" BOOK FOR PODIATRIC MEDICAL ASSISTANTS
Podiatric Medical Assisting is a wonderful book for the Podiatric Medical Assistant. It covers anatomy, radiology, instrumentation, taping and much more. The book is easy to read and the chapters are written by real podiatric medical assistants. I just heard these assistants speak at the MidWest Podiatary Conference and they speak as well as they write. Anne Thompson, Cathy Hightower and Dr. Latta (she use to be an assistant) are wonderful. 'BUY THE BOOK....."

Proverbs for the People
Published in Hardcover by Kensington Pub Corp (June, 2003)
Authors: Tracy Price-Thompson, Taressa Stovall, and Jewell Parker Rhodes
Average review score:

Truths to Live By
We have all heard proverbs at some point in our lives; little truths that teach morals, tell stories, or teach us how to live. In PROVERBS FOR THE PEOPLE, authors take insightful African, African American, and Biblical proverbs and utilize them to create extraordinary short stories that depict truths and leave marks on the heart.

This unique anthology contains stories from well known authors such as Travis Hunter, Omar Tyree, Margaret Johnson-Hodge, Pearl Cleage, and others, as well as stories from up and coming authors. Like the proverbs they represent, the stories are diverse and full of emotions. Although all of the stories were wonderful and touching, some of personal favorites were Gwynne Forster's "First Thing Monday Morning," which taught the morals that actions speak louder than words and to be careful what you wish for, because you just may get it, and Robert Fleming's "A Crisis of Faith," about a man who is wrongly incarcerated.

PROVERBS FOR THE PEOPLE is a wonderful novel that will teach, inspire, and entertain. It has a story that everyone can relate to, and will make a wonderful addition to any book collection.

Superb!
I really enjoyed this book. All of the stories are wonderful and the connection to the proverb that they all wrote about was simply masterful! I particularly enjoyed the story Franklin White gave us. His proverb dealt with "no matter how long a log stays in the water, a log it will remain." His story about a black actress in Hollywood who did everything under the sun to become more mainstream was brillant. I will not spoil it for others but the story really made me think about all the black actresses who have to jump through hoops to finally get a part in a mainstream movie. After they read this story-maybe they won't be so hard pressed to get in the mainstream!

Great Work
I think this book was long overdue. This is what the AA community needs. Travis Hunter, who is head and shoulders above any other writer in the business right now, brings us a story so filled with love I cried. Omar Tyree's story needed some work but he tried. I loved Pearl Cleage's story as well and Margerette J. Hodge touched my spirit. She's a great writer too. I liked Tonya Marie Evans story. This should've been made like the coffee table books so everyone could read it like a conversation piece.

A Fun Look At My FAVORITE Holiday. BANG-BANG!!!
Halloween Hijinx is the second children's book by Pro-Wrestling legend Mick Foley, and it's even better than his first, Christmas Chaos. Hijinx intertwines the stories of three Human children & three Monster children as they prepare to celebrate Halloween. The Mind and Heart of the Negotiator (2nd Edition)
Published in Paperback by Prentice Hall (15 December, 2000)
Author: Leigh L. Thompson
Average review score:

Good (supplementary) book on Negotiation
The book is very well structured and extremely readable with real case problems. It starts off with the big picture of negotiation, leads to specific points, and includes toward the end a lot of "people skills" (likes social dilemmas or different cultures). The book is neately structured with a great conclusion at every chapter. Quantitative support is used only where necessary and therefore kept to a minimum. I recommended as a supplementary book to Getting to Yes (still my all time favourite) or The Art and Science of Negotiation (for the very serious student).

Comprehensive and Practical
As a professor of Organizational Leadeship and Conflict Resolution...as well as a practicing mediator and negotiator, I found this book to be of great interest. There are many books on negotiation that either focus on the simplistic bargaining tactics or the theoretical implications of negotiation. This text skillfully integrates both of these elements providing the reader with a comprehensive viewpoint as it relates to negotiation.

Of specific assistance were the many helpful examples and tips placed throughout the book. If I had to criticize the book, I would only say that it is not a simple read per se for the beginning negotiator. That is, there are elements of logic, weighted analysis and such that the novice negotiator may get lost in. Looking past that, there are many helpful tips, tactics and theories that any negotiator could benefit from.

Now if the price could just come down a bit (I'm negotiating), then this would be a perfect book for a course on negotiation!

Brilliant tool to prepare for/evaluate negotiations
Thompson's book provides an easy to read guide for both the novice and experienced negotiator. While providing clear strategic advice on what to do at and away from the table, this book goes one step further by providing insights into the mental models of negotiators and the biases that can seriously hinder one's negotiated outcome. I used this book for a negotiation course at Harvard, and continue to refer back to it in my work and personal interactions.

Awesome!
our little guy (now 10 months) has loved this book since he got it at 4 months of age. I've had to change the picture 2x since he sticks his fingers all the way through and scratches the picture. This will put a smile on his face like no other book. I am going to buy a bunch of 'picture me birthday' to give out as party favors for his 1st birthday. you will not regret this purchase!

Picture Me Cute as Can Bee
I love this book. It was bought as a gift for my baby, now I have given it as a gift to several of my friends. My 7 month old loved seeing the baby faces and the bright colorful pictures

a great picture book for young kids
My 2 year old loves looking at this book. She seems fascinated at seeing herself dressed as a bee, a flower, etc. This is one of our favorite books. I think everyone would love this little book.
